about us
In recent years, there have been a large number of new developments with regards to databases and database technologies. This has been driven in large part by the new and emerging methodologies which have seen a change in the way databases are viewed.
This trend of divergence has seen the development of database technologies which are very specific to particular applications - a trend which only makes it more difficult to decide which database to use for your specific situation.
On one hand, databases have gotten simpler. Some databases such as those powering content websites simply allow the addition and retrieval of data at very fast speeds.
On the other hand they have also gotten more complex. Geospatial data and GIS solutions require large amounts of space, processing power and can push many modern relational databases to their limits.
This site aims to make it easier for you to research which technology may be best for you, allow you to share thoughts, experiences and ideas with the community and provide a technical resource for developers and DBA's.
Much of the content on this site has been arranged into the following categories:
- Relational Databases
- Object Relational Tools
- Object Databases
- Prevalence Layers
Each of these categories represents a particular method of implementation for data storage in a project. They are not mutually exclusive - in fact - many projects have benefited from understanding what each of these implementations has to offer and then exploiting their relative strengths.
If you are now starting your research then I invite you to start here at
The current state of database technologies.
